THE NATIONAL ELECTIONS COMMISSION AND ELECTIONS
The 2008 elections law mandated the National Elections Commission (NEC) to organize and supervise the 2010 general elections, the most complex in the history of parliamentary elections in Sudan.
During the elections, scheduled for April 2010, voters will elect candidates for the following offices:
• The president of the republic • The president of the Government of South Sudan (GOSS) • State governors • Members of the National Assembly (parliament) • Members of the South Sudan Legislative Assembly (SSLA) • Members of state legislative assemblies
Those voting in the South will be asked to elect candidates for other offices as well.
- For the first time in the history of the Sudan, constituencies shall be designated for women and political parties shall be able to contest seats by proportional representation. - Women shall be allocated 25 percent of the total number of constituencies, with 15 percent of constituencies contested on the basis of proportional representation and 60 percent by geographical constituencies.
The elections process begins with the determining of geographical constituencies, followed by registration of voters, announcement of the final lists of voters, declaration of candidacies, electoral campaign, voting and announcement of the results.
